Biography

Isaac Guion was born in 1685-6, possible twin brother of Susannah Guion. They were the children of Lewis Guion and Tomaza Forestiere. Isaac and Susanne were said to have been born in England where their Huguenot parents lived after fleeing France in 1681.

On the fly-leaf of the original French Bible belonging to the Guion Family of New Rochelle, formerly in the possession of the late Joshua Purdy of North Salem, is written:[2]

Cette Bible Appartient au moy Valther Humbert du Locke & de la de fond Bourgeois Mangin L'Aumale mille Sept cent et un F.I.
Au nom de Dieu Isaac Guion a marié ma Fille Marie le 25 d'aust 1710 par Monsieur Le Roux ministre de L'église Française de la Nouvelle York. en présence de Le Roux Monsieur Paul Drauvillet ancien & pour témoins Abraham Girard et sa femme.

Isaac was a Yeoman and Justice of the Peace at New Rochelle. As shown in the Bible entry, on 25 Aug 1710 Isaac Guion married Marie. She was Marie Malherbe, daughter of Nicholas Malherbe, a Huguenot from Louden, Poitou, France. Several refugees of this name fled from Loudun. —(Lievre, III., 295, 355.)[3] Isaac inherited land from Guion’s Neck near Rye and was the owner of a warehouse on Machet’s Creek. His will was dated 1769. Isaac passed away, age 98, at New Rochelle before 7 May 1783, the date his will was proved.[4]

Will, Abstract of

667. Isaac Guion, New Rochelle. Gentleman, Directs 23 acres of land in the West Division, adjoining land of Peter Flandreau, to be sold. Leaves to son Isaac, " all my salt meadow in Rodmans neck, and a silver porringer, marked L. G." To son Abraham £100, a silver tankard, and his cane. To son John £100. Legacies to sons Peter and David. Leaves to daughter Dinah "my homestead lot of 20 acres, with buildings," while she remains single, then to be sold by executors. Also leaves her "my French Bible in two volumes." Legacies to daughter Hester, wife Peter Sicord, (and her 3 daughters Mary, Hester and Catharine) and to daughter Mary, widow of John Bonet. Mentions my 5 sons Isaac, Abraham, John, Peter and David. The will enumerates a very large collection of household wares, etc. Witnesses. Jean Angevine, Benjamin Guion Jacobus Bleecker. Dated Feb. 9, 1769. Proved May 7, 1783.[4] There is a more complete copy of the Will here.[5]
