Biography

William was born about 1853. He was the son of Robert Grigg and Grace Knight.

His father, Robert Grigg, an agricultural laborer from Cornwall, aged 25 and his mother, Grace (Knight), also aged 25 arrived in South Australia on the "Monsoon" 17 March 1857 from Liverpool. They and their children William, aged 3 and his sister Ellen, an infant, are listed as GREGG. The following year his brother Richard was born on 14 April 1858 in Queenstown (Adelaide), South Australia.

By 1860 the Grigg family lived in the Maldon area in Victoria where his siblings Thomas, Elizabeth, Ann & John were born.

He passed away in 1905 and was buried at the Maldon Cemetery. [1]

OBITUARY[2]

A highly-esteemed resident of Maldon, in the person of Mr. William Grigg, expired at his father's residence on Tuesday, after an illness extending over two years, from miners' complaint, at the age of 52 years. The deceased gentleman tried many remedies, and consulted several specialists, but without avail, and he was perfectly resigned to his fate. He was a native of Cornwall, and arrived in Maldon when only four years of age. Mr. Grigg, who was unmarried, was one of the lst hands employed at the South German mine, where he won the respect of all his fellow workmen. He was a prominent member of the Miners' Association since the inception of the Maldon branch, and was one of the most ardent workers at the am--- sports demonstration. He was steward at the South German mine for 15 years. He was an old member of the Oddfellows' Lodge, and a regular attendant at the meeting while his health lasted. The funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended. The members of the A.M A. and Oddfellows' Lodge marched in the mourning procession. The Rev. Mr. Lavers read the burial service.
