Biography

Early Life

Irene Jennie (Griffing) Schlobohm was born on 19 Apr 1904 in Missouri to William Newton Griffing (1876 - 1954) and Clarlita Sophia Schick (1886 - 1976). She was the oldest of six children. Her siblings were...

In 1910, she, her parents, and her next two siblings lived on her maternal grandparent's farm. Her father reported being a sign painter out of work for 10 weeks. Irene was not attending school at the time. [1]
In 1920, the family lived in their own home in Richland, Missouri and her father worked as a house painter. Her mother tended to all the children and all but the youngest attended school. [2] Irene went to school through the 7th grade. [3]
Tragedy fell on the family in March of 1924 when her 3-year-old sister, Lula Mae Griffing, and 12-year-old brother, John Franklin Griffing, both died from pertussis within three days of each other.

Marriage and Family

Irene married Charles George Schlobohm (1898 - 1992) on 1 Jan 1923 in Smithton, Pettis, Missouri. [4] The couple continued to live in Smithon. They rented a home and ran a farm next to Charles' parents home. [5]
By 1940, the family had moved to a farm Elk Fork, Pettis, Missouri. [3]
The couple had eleven children throughout their marriage, but the youngest was still born.

Their son Clarence joined the military, and was stationed in Japan in 1948. He surprised his mother with a phone call from across the world. At the time, the family lived in La Monte, Missouri. [6]

Personal Life

At the 1949 state fair, Irene's canning and preserves won several Home Economics Cooking Awards. [7]

Death and Burial

Irene died on 18 Feb 1988 in La Monte, Pettis County, Missouri,at aged 83 and is buried at LaMonte Cemetery, La Monte, Pettis County, Missouri. [8]
