Last Will and Testament of Archibald Greenfield

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. Archibald Greenfield of Salem in the county of Essex an New England. Mariner being weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory, Thanks be given to God & calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, Do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner; that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executor hereafter named, And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner. In primas I give to my wife MARY GREENFIELD the rent of my dwelling house where her son THOMAS GAUTER and her son-in-law JOSEPH ANTHONY now dwell for the term of one year after my decease.

ITEM: I give to my Nephew JOHN LYALL and to his heirs and assign forever all my houses and lands in Queen Ann's County Maryland.

ITEM: I give to my wife MARY the use and improvement of my now dwelling house that stands in my garden with half the garden during her natural life . I also give to my said wife a large black walnut table and one iron pot which she shall choose and all her own household furniture which she brought with her to me and all the wood I have in the wood house and barn with the meat in the house.

ITEM: I give to my grandson ARCHIBALD GREENFIELD the son of JAMES GREENFIELD my bible and a silver spoon marked A.G.F. item: I give to my grandson JAMES GREENFIELD the son of STARR ARCHIBALD GREENFIELD a silver spoon marked A.G.F. & I .G.R .

ITEM: I give to my grandson GREENFIELD ALGER a silver spoon marked A.G.F. & A.R.G.

ITEM: I give to my grandson ARCHIBALD GREENFIELD son of STARR ARCHIBALD GREENFIELD my silver shoe buckles and knee buckles.

ITEM: I give to the wife of my son STARR ARCHIBALD GREENFIELD two silver teaspoons marked A.G.F.

ITEM: I give to the wife of my son JAMES two silver spoons marked A.G.F.

ITEM: I give two tea spoons to my daughter ELIZABETH ALGER

ITEM: I give to my daughter ELIZABETH ALGER and her heirs and assign forever one-fourth part of my estate both real and personal

ITEM: I give and bequeath to my two sons viz. STARR ARCHIBALD GREENFIELD and JAMES GREENFIELD and to their heirs and assign forever all the residue and remainder of my estate both real and personal.

Lastly I hereby constitute & appoint DAVID SMITH of Salem sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills and testaments ratify & confirming this my & no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal Nov. the First 1767.

Thomas Ward of Middletown, Hartford Co., CT, and Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of Mr. Thomas Starr, formerly of Newport, deceased, carpenter, conveyed unto thier brother, Archibald Greenfield of Newport, "a Piece of Land with a House upon it lying and being within the said Town of Newport which was granted by the Proprietors of said Newport to our Honoured Father Thomas Starr."

Comfort Starr of Guilford, Conn; Comfort Starr of Danbury, Conn; Thomas Norton and wife Rachel, and Daniel Dennison and wife Rachel of New London; Archibald Greenfield and wife Hannah of Lyme; Jonathan James, Thomas Starr, and John Chester and wife Mary of Groton, Conn; John Sage and wife Hannah, Joseph Kenney and wife Mary, Joseph Starr and Elizabeth Ward of Middletown, Conn, and William Peabody and wife Jerusha of Little Compton, R.R., in 1733-4, release to Benjamin Starr of New London, their right in 400 acres of land "granted by the Assembly in the Province of the Mass. Bay in General Court 19 Oct 1658 unto the widow of Thomas Starr late of Charlestown and by the General Court of said province in Oct 1733 confirmed unto the said Benjamin and the rest of the descendants of the said widow."
