Biography

Janet was the daughter of Patrick Grey and Annabella Forbes.[1][2][3]

She married, firstly, Sir Alexander Blair, 5th of Balthayock, son of Thomas Blair, 4th of Balthayock after 1502.[2][3][4] They had issue:

  1. Thomas Blair, 6th of Balthayoch d. c 1568 was a child of Janet Gray and Sir Alexander Blair, 5th of Balthayock

She married, secondly, Thomas Fraser, 2nd Lord (Fraser of) Lovat, son of Hugh Fraser, 1st Lord (Fraser of) Lovat and Violet Lyon, before 1509. [2][3][4] They had issue:

  1. Robert Fraser
  2. Andrew Fraser
  3. Thomas Fraser

She married, thirdly, David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford, son of Walter Lindsay and unknown daughter Erskine, before 1 Dec 1534. [1][4]

At Edinburgh on 3 Sep 1535 a Warrant under the signet decreed that proceedings be taken on letters raised at the instance of James, Lord Ogilvy, against Janet Gray, Lady Lovet, and David Lindsay of Edzell, her spouse although they had also raised letters against Lord Ogilvy for molesting their tenants gathering peat from the moor of Montreathmont to the lands of Halton of Kinnell. [5]

On 1 July 1545 David, Earl of Crawford and Jean Gray, his spouse, discharged James, Lord Ogilvy, of the rent of the lands of Memus bank. [6]

Janet's last will was dated 5 Feb 1549/50.[1] She was dead before12 Nov 1550.[3]

Research Notes

  • As her father died 1 Sep 1464, Janet's conception must have been on or before that date and her birth before 29 May 1465.
  • RBS is a bit confusing in stating that Janet was the daughter of Andrew, 3rd Lord Gray as there was no such person. She was, according to Scots Peerage and the Complete Peerage, sister of Andrew, Second Lord Gray.[4]

This seems to be all imported from dubious sources, I have removed her link to Patrick Gray Master of Gray as her father and Annabel Forbes as her mother. They married about 1444 no way Janet was their daughter she was born about 1482 and married about 1500 to young Alexander Blair who was born about 1483.

Janet was daughter of Andrew Gray by his second marriage her mother being Elizabeth Stewart, Not wise to copy from other genealogies without checking facts. Seems the above sources are inappropriate. Likely that her half suster Janet was born of Andrew's first marriage.
