Pioneer Passes
The death occurred in Kalgoorlie on Thursday last of Mr. Joseph Grant, one of the pioneers of the goldfields, at the age of 77 years. The late Mr. Grant reached Southern Cross in 1890 and two years later arrived at Coolgardie, a week after the discovery of gold there. The following year saw him in Kalgoorlie, about three months after Paddy Hannan found gold here. He was also a well-known figure in the prosperous days of Broad Arrow, Kookynie and Pingin, where he ran hotels and worked mines. Before he retired five years ago, Mr. Grant was a resident of Celebration. He was also a valued member of the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society. Mr. Grant leaves a widow and two married daughters. [1]
