Biography

Erik Jonsson Granberg was born in about 1718 in Sweden, but exactly where in Sweden is unknown. He was married to Karin Larsdotter and probably worked at the Huså mines in Kall before he and his family came to Norway in the 1760s. In the ministerial register for Jämtland, it is stated that he was a "labor worker" when his daughter Catharina was born.[1]

Erik and Karin had five children:

  • Jonas, born 30 December 1755 in Kall.[2] In 1801, he was a servant in Overnesset and died unmarried there in 1809, where he was called John Eriksen.
  • Catharina, born 14 October 1757 at Skutan in Kall.[3][4] In 1790, she married Lars Nilsen at Øvre Gjermstadvald. He was born in 1765 at Indal to parents Nils Knutsen and Magdalena Larsdatter.
  • Lars, born 11 January 1760 in Huså, Kall.[5] Died 1761.
  • Lars, born 1762 in Huså.[6] The church book for Kall records that Lars, son of Erik Granberg and Karin Larsdotter, was born on 9 February and baptized on the 14th. It was later added after that entry "in Norway".
  • Christina, born 16 July 1764 at Bredingsvald.[7] Christina was a servant in the home of Jeremias Holmen in Midtholmen in 1785. In 1793, while living in Nord-Ekloa, she had a son named Lars with bachelor Torkild Olsen Voldsvald. The child died at only three weeks old.

Erik died at Øver-Kvernmoen in Verdal, Trondhjem (modern Trøndelag County), Norway in 1785, according to the local church book. When Karin died is unknown.
