Biography

Catharina Eriksdotter Granberg was born in 1757 in Kall, Jämtland, Sweden to Erik Jonsson Granberg and Karin Larsdotter.[1] Erik and Karin (known in Norway as Erik Jonsen and Karin Larsdatter) first moved from Kall to Verdal, Trondhjem (modern Trøndelag County), Norway in the 1760s and were homesteaders on Bjørsmoen in Verdal until 1785.

In 1783, while she lived at Bjørganvald, Catharina had her son Tomas with bachelor Lars Hansen Kråg.[2] Both Catharina and the child's father were sentenced to rent fines.

The next thing we know about Catharina as unmarried is that in 1784 she was a witness in a trial against a servant girl in Inndal vestre, Magnhild Johnsdatter, who was sentenced to beheading for having given birth to a child in secret. Catharina was in the service of Nils Indalen in Inndal vestre at this time, and she found the fetus in a clothes chest in the attic.[3]

When she took over for her father in 1785, Catharina was in the service of Sheriff Ole Sevaldsen at Leirfall.

In 1790, Catharina Eriksdatter (as she was known in Norway) married Lars Nilsen Indal, born 1765 in Verdal. Lars and Catharina lived on Gjermstadvald, Verdal for many years before they moved to Bergstua as homesteaders sometime between 1801 and 1813. They moved quite a few times over the years. At the census in 1801, they are listed as homesteaders at Øver-Gjermstad. According to the 1820 and 1825 tax lists, they were homesteaders at Bergstua in those years, but probably came there many years earlier, because their daughter Malena was a child at Inndalsvald as early as 1813. They were probably still at Bergstua in 1828, but Lars was a renter at Melby when he died in 1838, and Catharina was a pauper in Østgårdsvald when she died in 1843.

Their children, all born at Øvre Gjermstadvald, were:

  • Malena, born 1790. She had children with two other men before she married Arnt Jonsen Lindset in 1817.
  • Nils, born 1792. In 1818, he married Maren Pedersdatter Melby, born 1789. They were renters and later homesteaders at Melbyvald, and they had three children. Nils died at Østgårdsvald in 1862.
  • Hans, born 1795, died the same year.
  • Sigrid, born 1796. In 1821, she married Halvor Pedersen Melby, born 1795. They were homesteaders at Melby and later renters at Lillemoen in Sul. When Sigrid died from consumption (tuberculosis) in 1837, they were living at Sendesvald. Halvor Pedersen remarried in 1851.
  • Erik, born 1798. In 1828, he married Beret Marta Hansdatter Grunden, born 1803 in Auskin. They were renters at Midt-Grundan, Årstad, Vest-Hellan, and Dillvald before Erik built Sulstua vestre around 1860.
