William (Graham) Graham First Earl of Airth is Notable.
European Aristocracy
William Graham was a member of the aristocracy in Europe.

William Graham was born circa July 1589. He was the son of John Graham 6th Earl of Menteith and Maria Campbell, daughter of Sir Colin Campbell fo Glenorchy.[1][2]

In 1626 he was sworn of the Privy Council in Scotland. Two years later in 1628 he was elevated to Lord President of the Court of Session, Scotland's most senior civil court judge and Lord Justice General, Scotland's most senior criminal court judge.

In 1633 having unsuccessfully petitioned to have restored to him the ancient Earldom of Strathearn held at one time by the 1st Earl of Menteith, he was instead created 1st Earl of Airth, arguably a much less distinguished honour than that of Strathearn.[3][4]

In effect although William Graham was the de jure 7th Earl of Menteith, having been denied the restoration of that dignity, it was not available to him.

He married Agnes Gray in 1612.[1][5][6] They had issue, including:

  1. John, m. Mary, daughter of William Keith and Mary Erskine on 12 Apr 1632[7][5][2]
  2. Archibald, c. 25 Apr 1631,[8] m. Janet Johnston[5] They had:
    1. John, dsp[5]
  3. James,[6] m. 1st Margaret Erskine, 2nd daughter of James Earl of Buchan[5] by whom he had
    1. Marian, m. Walter Graham of Gartur[5]
He m. 2nd Isabella, elder daughter of John Bramhall,[5] and had
    2. Helen, m. Capt. Rawdon, heir to Lord Conway.[5]
  4. Andrew, d. young[5]
  5. Robert, dsp[6][5]
  6. Patrick, dsp[6][5]
  7. Charles, dsp[6][5]
  1. Issobell, c. 14 Dec 1624[9][6]
  2. Mary, m. John Campbell bef 1635 as his 1st wife.[10][11][5] They had issue, including:
    1. William, c. 9 Oct 1643, [12]
  3. Anne, 3rd daughter,[6] m. Sir Mungo Murray of Blebo[5]
  4. Jane, 4th daughter,[6] m. John Chisholm of Cromlix[5]
  5. Margaret, m. Alexander Lord Garliest[5]

William died in 1661 after 13 Apr.[3]

Research Notes

Cokayne claims that John is the "only son and heir",[2] yet that can be shown to be incorrect by the baptismal record of Archibald.[8] and is also counter to Nicholas who reports a total of six sons including John and Archibald.[6]

Ruth,

Mark will work on the merge in due course as he likes to check all the sources & data before merging profiles that are part of the Project. It's best to leave the merge pending.
