Biography

This profile is part of the Spencer Name Study.
Sarah (Gose) Spencer was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

Sarah Elizabeth Gose was born on 15 November 1857 in Bath County, Kentucky, United States,[1], daughter of James Phillip Gose and Sophia Stewart.

Sarah is seen at home with her parents and sibling in the 1860 census. Her father James (age 26), mother Sophia (age 27) and children Sarah (age 3) and WIlliam (age 1) were in Bath County, Kentucky.[2]

Sarah's father died in 1862. Her mother remarried and the family relocated to Indiana.

Sarah married Amos C Spencer on 20 June 1874 in Clay County, Indiana.[3] They were parents of eight known children.

In the 1880 census Sarah (age 20), Keeping House, was the wife of Amos C. Spencer in Posey Township, Clay, Indiana.[4]

In the 1900 census Sarah (age 43) was the wife of Amos C Spencer in Lost Creek Township, Vigo, Indiana.[5]

Sarah died (age 52 yr) on 19 June 1909 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana[6] and was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.[7]

Research Notes

  • The profile manager Jeffrey Spencer indicates personal knowledge of her death about 1942, as remembered 5 Feb 2020. This differs from the Indiana death record and grave record. Note that a headstone photo is not available, but the Indiana death index corroborates the information in the grave record.
