EVENING STAR, ISSUE 12436, 24 FEBRUARY 1905, PAGE 3 The death of the Rev. John Goring, of Wiston Park, Sussex, recalls the more or less romantic story of the Goring baronetcy. The deceased was a grandson of Sir Charles Goring, fifth baronet, of Highden, in Sussex. The Highden estates were sold in 1886, after the death of the ninth baronet, for £80,000. The tenth baronet, Sir Craven Goring, who died in 1897, was so little blessed with this world's goods that he was a candidate for the post of City Marshal in 1893. Sir Craven was succeeded by his distant kinsman, Sir Harry Yelverton Goring, the present baronet, who at the moment of his succession was keeping a tobacconist's shop at Tamworth. His mother was a daughter of the third Viscount Avonmore, and a great-grand-daughter of Baron Yelverton, afterwards Viscount Avonmore, the famous Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The present baronet went as a young man to New Zealand, where his father was engaged as private secretary to Sir George Grey. Thence he wandered to Sydney, where, failing to find any employment, he enlisted in the 12th Suffolk Regiment. He rose by merit to the rank of sergeant-major, and retired in 1866 with a pension of 26s 6d per week, and a large family to feed, he became a tobacconist. When he came into the title, his eldest son was in New Zealand, managing a sheep run for the Hon. W. W. Johnston. Sir Harry still lives in a modest way at Tamworth.[3]
