Biography

Nina Gore was born at Lawton Oklahoma 26 June 1903, the daughter of Thomas Gore and Nina Kay.[1] Her father, Thomas Gore, served as senator from the State of Oklahoma.

She was married to Eugene L. Vidal 9 January 1922 in Washington, D.C. She was 19 years old at the time of her marriage.[2] The following is the photo caption for Nina's wedding announcement, which appeared in the Tonkawa News 2 February 1922:

"Mrs. Eugene Luther Vidal, who before her marriage to Lieutenant Vidal, United States air service, was Nina Gore, daughter of former Senator and Mrs. Thomas P. Gore of Oklahoma. The wedding took place in Washington before a distinguished company representative of diplomatic, senatorial, congressional and resident society. Owing to the illness of the bride's father, she was given in marriage by Representative William A. Rodenberg."[3]

She was married to Hugh D. Auchincloss 8 October 1935 in Washington, D.C.[4]

Senator and Mrs. Thomas P. Gore announce the marriage of their daughter, Mrs. Nina Gore Vidal, to Mr. Hugh Dudley Auchincloss Tuesday, October 8. Due to the absence of the bride's parents, who are in Oklahoma, the ceremony took place in the apartment of Mrs. McKenney Mallan at Wardman Park Hotel. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Joseph R. Sizoo, rector of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Nina was married to Major General Robert Olds 7 June 1942 in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:[6]

Washington, June 6--Mrs. Nina Gore Auchincloss and Major General Robert Olds of the army air corps were married today at the bride's Georgetown home.
Mrs. Olds is the daughter of former Oklahoma Senator and Mrs. Thomas P. Gore.
General Olds formerly commanded the army air corps ferry command and now commands the Second air force at Spokane, Wash. His first wife died in 1926. He remarried twice but both marriages ended in divorce. Mrs. Olds was twice married and divorced. Old's age was given as 45 and the bride's as 38.

Nina Gore Olds, 75, a former Washington socialite and mother of writer Gore Vidal, died Monday in Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.
Mrs. Olds was the daughter of Thomas Pryor Gore, a Democrat who was one of the first two U.S. senators elected from Oklahoma. Gore, who was blinded in childhood accidents, died in 1949.
Mrs. Olds was born in Lawton, Okla., then in the Indian Territory. IN 1921 she was married to Eugene Vidal, an aeronautics instructor at the U.S. Military Academy. They moved here in 1925 when he helped found Luddington Airlines, which provided the first direct air passenger service between Washington and New York City. during the Roosevelt administration he was director of aeronautics, a predecessor of the Civil Aeronautics Board.
Following her divorce from Vidal in 1925, Mrs. Olds was married to the late Hugh D. Auchincloss, a Washington investment banker and the stepfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. That marriage ended in divorce in 1941 and she was married to Maj. Gen. Robert Olds, a former commander of the 2nd Air Force. He died in the late 1940s.
While in the Washington area Mrs. Olds lived in the District and in McLean. For the last year she lived in San Antonio, Tex.
Besides her son Gore Vidal, she leaves two children from her second marriage, Thomas G. Auchincloss of Vermont and Nina Straight of Bethesda; and two stepchildren from her third marriage, Brig Gen. Robin Olds, a former commandant of cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy, who lives in Colorado, and Steven Olds of Baltimore.
