Vice-president and Mrs Calvin S. Coolidge Arrive — President Harding Sends Condolences

Vice-President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge arrived in Burlington early this morning from Boston summoned by the death of Andrew I Goodhue. Mrs Coolidge’s father which occurred yesterday at his late residence at 312 Maple street after several months of ill health. Mr Goodhue who had been in the steamboat inspection service in the Burlington district for 34 years had been an invalid since early in the winter when a severe attack of acute indigestion had caused heart trouble. He was born at Hancock, N.H., on January 12, 1848 and received his education in the elementary and high schools of Hancock and Francistown, N.H., later learning the boiler trade. During the year 1870 which also records the date of his marriage to Miss Lamira Barrett of Nashua, he came to Burlington, where for 15 years he was the engineer at the Kilburn & Gates furniture factory and the Burlington Cotton Mills. His first appointment as steamboat inspector came through President Grover Cleveland on July 23 1886. During 34 years of service in this capacity he had been associated with five different hull inspectors and at one time had as many as 75 vessels under his inspection comprising many small pleasure craft. The Lang & Goodhue Manufacturing company, hydraulic engineers and machinery manufacturers was formed while Mr Goodhue was serving as Government Inspector. At his first appointment as inspector he was located in a small office in the old railroad station at the foot of College street. In 1906 the offices were moved to the Strong building and in 1915 quarters were secured in the Federal building which were in turn given over to the Internal Revenue Department and further location was made in the Burlington block on St. Paul street. Mr Goodhue took retirement from active duty in December of 1920. His wife and only daughter Mrs Grace Goodhue Coolidge are the surviving members of his family. For several years he had been a deacon of the Congregational Church and he was also numbered a member of Burlington lodge and Burlington chapter the Masonic body of Burlington and was a Democrat. The funeral services are to be conducted at his late residence tomorrow afternoon at three o’clock.
