Biography

Spanish Flag
Minnie (Gomez) Lee was born in Spain.

Merrine "Minnie" Remedios Gomez was born in 1899[1][2] in Atarfe, Spain.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Per her daughter Violet's marriage certificate, she was of 'Spanish-French' ethnicity. She emigrated from Spain on the 12th of April 1913, and arrived in Honolulu on the 10th of June 1913.[8]

Minnie married Soong Myung Lee on the 26th of January 1914 in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Maui, Hawaii.[9] They had received their license to marry two days before.[10]

Minnie was not in the same home as Soon in 1950.[11] She was listed as the head of household in Maui.[11] It states correctly that she was born in Spain.[11] Her race is listed as Caucasian, while Evelyn's is listed as Korean.[11] Evelyn was working as a secretary at an auto sales company.[11]

Minnie's husband Soon died in 1963, when she was sixty-four. She moved to San Leandro, California[1] after that, to live near family. Minnie lived to the age of seventy-seven; taking her last breath on the 30th of November 1976.[1][2][5][12] Her remains were returned to Wailuku, to be interred with her husband.[7] For an unknown reason, Minnie was interred with her daughter Evelyn Faith Lee in Maui Memorial Park instead of with her husband in the Saint Anthony Church Catholic Cemetery in Maui.[7]

Memories: 1
Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
This is the only great-grandparent that I met. I was spending the summer with my Granny Vi and Grandpa Ed. The family got together and I remember us all packed together, mingling. The uncles all seemed so tall to me then. Abuela sat in a chair in a bedroom, away from the crowd. My brother and I went back to give her a hug and a kiss. She sat silently, quite frail, and accepted them. I never saw her again. I believe she died the following year.
