Edward Creston Gleed was the seventh African American graduate from West Point, a Buffalo Soldier, and one of the Tuskegee Airmen.[1]

Edward Creston Gleed was born in Lawrence, Kansas in 1916. He was the son of Herbert Joseph Gleed and Carrie Syphax Joseph.[2] Carrie Syphax Joseph was the grandchild of Nancy Syphax, granddaughter of Maria Carter Syphax. Maria was the mulatto daughter of George Washington Parke Custis, grandson of First Lady of the United States Martha (Dandridge) Washington. Maria Carter Syphax's white half-sister through George, Mary Custis, was the wife of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

In 1943, he married Lucille Elbertha Graves Shelby.[3] They had three daughters.

He enlisted in the armed services in 1941. [4]

Highlighted Military Service

  • United States Military - West Point's seventh African American graduate.
  • U.S. Army Air Force officer with the famed Buffalo Soldiers/9th Cavalry Regiment (United States).
  • 332nd Fighter Group’s operations officer and combat fighter pilot with the 99th Fighter Squadron, best known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee Airmen were known for heroic combat service in support of Allied Forces in the European Theater. They served with the 332d Expeditionary Operations Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, both largely Black units of the United States Army Air Forces. He was one of the most prominent members of Tuskegee Airmen's ninth-ever aviation cadet program. [5] He is is known for his P-51D Mustang aircraft, "The Creamer's Dream", which has been the subject of several famous, widely distributed photographs. Tuskegee Airmen received Congressional Gold Metals for their service.

Post Military

After leaving the military, he enrolled at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles and graduated in 1976 with a Juris Doctorate Degree. [6]

He died in 1990 and is buried with his wife in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.[2] [7][8]
