Biography

Joseph Gilbert was born in 1885, in Waterloo, Iowa. Parents are Frank Gilbert and Henrietta Collins.[1]

Joseph Gilbert first married Nellie Burk (1885-1973) on May 5, 1909 in Waterloo, Iowa.[2] [3] · (Nellie married , a second time, in 1946 August Ehlers (6 Mar 1869 Camanche, Clinton County, Iowa, -13 Feb 1960))

1910 US census records Nellie Gilbert as the daughter-in-law of Frank and Henrietta Gilbert, residing in their home along with their son Joseph.[4]

  2. George Gilbert 1916–2010[6]

1920 US Census shows John with Nellie with two boys.[7]

1925 Iowa Census shows Joseph with Nellie and the two boys.[8]

Appearently, Nellie and Joseph broke up and divorced between 1925 and 1930 when he married Beunetta Crowter. No divorce papers have been found.

Joseph Gilbert second married Beunetta Crowter in about 1930 in Austin, Minnesota.

  2. Dorothy Jean Gilbert 28 Aug 1933–1942 (died young)[10][11]
  3. Roberta Jean Gilbert b. 21 Sep 1943[12]

The 1940 US Census finds Beunetta in Joseph's household with Dorothy in Waterloo, Iowa.[13]

The 1950 US Census finds Joseph with Beunetta, Roberta, and Barbara. (Dorothy is dead by this date.) His occupation is clothes presser in the cleaning industry.[14]

Joe passed away on 25 Apr 1959 and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa.[15]

Research Notes

Dorothy Jean Gilbert and Barbara Jo Gilbert seems to be born in the same year, but at different locations in Iowa. Parents seem the same. Wonder if one was born in 1934 and not 1933.
