Daniel Giffen was born in Scotland.

Daniel Giffen, was christened February 8, 1769, in Southend, Argyll, Scotland, a son of Robert Giffen and Mary (Bane) Giffen. [1] Daniel immigrated with his parents to America, in 1776. The family landed in New York and settled first at Big Springs, Pennsylvania, but migrated to Virginia (now Brooke county) and lived near his maternal uncles. In 1787, the family made their home in Ohio county, Virginia. [2]

Daniel married Nancy A. Bell, also from Scotland. Daniel is found on the United States Census of 1810 and 1820, living in Ohio county, Virginia. [3] [4]

Daniel died January 13, 1852, near Short Creek, in Ohio county, Virginia and is buried in the Old Tent Cemetery, as are both of his parents. [5]

Giffen-570 and Giffen-80 appear to represent the same person because: It's the same GIFFEN, my 3rd great grand uncle.

Although you are right, today's genealogists would refer to Daniel Giffen as our 3rd great-granduncle. This keeps the generations in sync as Daniel is a brother to George, our 3rd great-grandfather. Much less confusing than the old convention.
