Robert was born about 1743 in Kildavie, a small village in the southern part of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyllshire, Scotland. He passed away in 1829 in Ohio County of what was then Virginia but is today the northern panhandle of West Virginia.

Robert Giffen was born, in 1743, at Kildave, Southend of Argyll county, Scotland. Robert married Mary Bane, in Scotland and they became the parents of three children, born in Scotland:

  • Daniel Giffen, christened February 8, 1769, in Southend, Argyll, Scotland [1]
  • Jane Giffen was born in Argyll ca. 1770 but no record of registration could be found. Robert’s will mentions these three eldest children.
  • John Giffen was born on 02 Nov 1772 in Kildavie and died December 21, 1856 in Belmont Co, Ohio, found on the United States census of 1850 [2]

Robert and Mary, with three small children, and another one on the way, left Scotland with Robert's sister Jane, and immigrated to America. [3] On the way, their daughter Margaret was born on June 28, 1776. The family landed in New York and settled first at Big Springs, Pennsylvania. [4]

Mary's brothers, John and William may have made the trip with them, or may have gone before them, but purchased four hundred acres of land in Brooke county, Virginia, which they called "Windy Hill Farm." Robert and Mary moved to this area in 1787.

  • "In the spring of 1787 Robert with his sons Daniel and John made a trip over the Allegheny mountains to a point known as Wheeling, in the state of Virginia. Here they built a cabin and put in a 'patch' of corn near what was later known as the Steenrod place two miles east of Wheeling. This was then a wild and wooly wilderness[5]

Robert died August 17, 1829, in Wheeling, Ohio County, Virginia and is buried there in the Old Tent Cemetery.[6]
