Frederick H. Gibbs was the son of Albion F. Gibbs and Mary True (Howard) Gibbs of Livermore, Maine,[1][1] with whom he was living at Livermore in 1860 at the age of 5[2] and at Peru, Maine, in 1870 at the age of 15.[3] In 1880, he was living in aboarding house at Lewiston, Maine, and working in a cotton mill.[4] The 1900 Census says he was born in May 1855.[5]
Marriage
Frederick H. Gibbs married Lydia Hale.[1] Frederic H. Gibbs and Lydia M. Hale, both of Fairfield, Maine, married there on 4 Jul 1883.[6] It may not have been his first marriage; see the Research Note below. In 1900, they were living at Fairfield with five children, ages 7 to 16, and Fred Gibbs was working as a cook in a restaurant.[5]
Death
The grave marker of Frederick H. Gibbs at the Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield, Maine, is inscribed with the dates 1855-1910.[7] he died before 6 May 1910, when the Census was taken at Fairfield and recorded his wife as a widow.[8]
Research Note
The usually reliable (about relationships, less so about dates and spellings) 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, says that Frederick Gibbs married, as his first wife, Cora Campbell.[1] The only Cora Campbell known to be living in the area at the time was Cora H. Campbell, born in 1859 and the daughter of Andrew and Angelia (Fuller) Campbell. She cannot have been the first wife of Frederick Gibbs, because she was Cora H. Campbell when she published her intention to marry Frank W. Coolidge at Livermore in October 1878,[9] the 1900 Census says they had been married for 21 years,[5] and she died as Cora Coolidge in 1934.[7] Fred Gibbs was shown in the Census as single (i.e., not married, widowed, or divorced) in 1880,[4] three years before his marriage to Lydia. Unfortunately, the record of Frederick's marriage to Lydia Hale does not say whether he had been previously married,[10] but based on all the evidence, it is likely that it was his first and only marriage.
