Note

Note: From church Marriage record: October 20th the bans having been proclaimed three times without opposition (sine oppositione) in the church in Prum and in the church in Niederpr'um, and no impediment being found (nullo detecto impedimento) having the churches authority (Canonico obtentis) .....a Rev ?? Domino Thees ???? parish (parochio) in Niedrpr'um ..... the sacrament of marriage are Joannes Josephus Artty legitimate son of Francis Joseph Artty, proprietarii and ??? Magdalena Vonaeffer of Niedernichlen and Marie Agatha Gerber, legitimate daughter of Joseph Gerber and Agatha Wagener of Pr'um. Witnesses were the father (pater) of the bride (sponsae) and Jacob Artty of Niedernichlen. The part I left out beginning with a Rev Domino Thees is problematic.....mainly because the term dimissorialibus can have two meanings. It can refer to the discharging of one's duties as in a priest performing the sacrament of marriage, but it can also refer to letters granting leave to depart one parish in order to enter another. And given that the banns being read in two different parishes, I wouldn't ignore that one. The above tells you who married who, but it doesn't tell you exactly where to look for Agatha's baptismal record!! I hope the above helps a bit. Patt
Prum Germany marriage certificate Nr. 15/19.10.1846
In this paper was noted that: Johann Joseph Arth, age 26, occupation 'propietor in Pruem', born in Pruem 13.11.1819 son of Franz Arth, age 69, occupation 'farmer', living in Niedermehlen and Maria Magdalena Schaeffer (death in Niedermehlen 30.05.1844) married (19.10.1846) Maria Agatha Gerber, age 21, born in Luxembourg-city 15.11.1824 doughter of Joseph Gerber (occupation prison-guard) and Agatha Wagner, both living in Pruem

> Their address at the time was 700 Plum St. Where in St. Paul was this?
ANSWER:
The Arth family were pioneer residents of the Dayton's Bluff
neighborhood, which is about a mile due east of downtown St. Paul.
It is one of the largest residential neighborhoods in the city, and was
settled first mostly by German immigrants in the 1880s and 1890s. The
neighborhood was named for Lyman Dayton, a real estate dealer from Rhode
Island, who settled in St. Paul in 1849, and purchased hundreds of acres
of land in the eastern and western parts of the city. He built his own
homestead on the brow of Dayton's Bluff in 1850. The section of
Dayton's Bluff the Arth family lived in, is now called Mounds Park. I
believe Peter, Joseph, and Jacob Arth settled on Dayton's Bluff about
1870, and were garden farmers there, long before the neighborhood was
more densely settled in the 1880s and 1890s. Unfortunately the Joseph
Arth home at 700 Plum was demolished (or moved?) during freeway
construction during the 1960s and 1970s.
> In the 1860 census they show up in New Canada Twp.
New Canada Township was one of several townships which formed Ramsey
County in pioneer days. The boundaries of New Canada Township in 1860,
(using the roads of today) were County Road D on the north, Century
Avenue on the east, Rice Street on the west, and Minnehaha Avenue on the
south. Today this area is comprised of many St. Paul neighborhoods,
including part of the Northend, the Payne-Phalen area, and the Hazel
Park neighborhood, parts of Maplewood, Little Canada, etc. Basically,
this is the area that was due north of the City of St. Paul.
QUESTION:
> Also it says they celebrated with a High Mass at Heart of Jesus Church.
> Any idea where this church was? I don't know if this was the correct
> name of the church. Agatha's brother and family were catholic. Was
> this a Catholic church?
>
ANSWER:
The church you refer to is actually Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
located at Arcade & E. 6th Street, in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood.
It was founded in 1881, and has been in continuous operation at that
site since. All of the records for this church have been microfilmed and
are available for copying at the Archdiocese of St. Paul Archives
Office, 226 Summit Ave., St. Paul.
QUESTION:
> I am also trying to locate when Joseph and Agatha died but I haven't
> been able to locate a burial location - I tried Calvary but no luck
> so far. Ideas?
ANSWER:
I don't know about Agatha, but Joseph J. Arth, died in St. Paul, on
May 1, 1902, age 82.
You should also try Oakland Cemetery (founded 1853), in St. Paul, and
St. John the Baptist (Catholic) in Little Canada.

From the Luxemburger Gazette Oct. 27, 1896 page 5, col 2&3.'
On last Monday the hightly respected and widely known Mr. Joseph Arth and his spouse of #700 Plum St. celebrated the rare occasion of their golden wedding anniversary. The spritiual festival began with a high-mass at 9:30 in the Heart ofJesus Church, at which service 40 direct descendants were present with the venerable pair, namely, 7 children, 24 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, along with many other relatives. Mr Arth was born on the 13 of Nov. 1819 at Pruem in the Gov. Adm. Dist. of Trier; he served 3 years in the military (rifleman) and in 1846 married Miss A. Gerber, with whom he has since dwelt in Happy Matrimony. The couple emigrated to America in 1857, and came in May of the same year to St. Paul, and built for themselves a house out of accumulated assets, the same house they now occupy, through hard work and diligence, they provided for their children properly, which although not constituting great wealth, was sufficient for their advancement. May the worth jubilarians have many years to enjoy their well earned rest in the continuously expanding circle of loved ones.'
