Biography

Edna Geise was born in October 1892. Her parents were Simon P. Geise (1859–1928) and Mary Ann Roush (1861–1945). She grew up on the family farm in Union Township, Union County, Pennsylvania.^[1], ^[2] In 1898 Edna and her siblings were students in the Eyer School, a one-room schoolhouse in Union Township.^[3]

She married Ralph Thomas Hess (1892–1980) in 1913.^[4] Their children included:

1. Robert Geise Hess (1915–2000)
2. Mary Angeline "Angie" Hess Ackerman (1916–2019)
3. Evelyn Elizabeth Hess (1918–deceased)
4. Geneva P. Hess McCance (1920–2014)
5. Helen Ada Hess Donahue (1925–2012)
6. Nina Irene Hess Harmon (1927–2006)

In 1920 they were living with their first 4 children, ages 1 month to 5 years, in the village of Winfield, Union County. Ralph was working as a depot hand for the railroad.^[5]

In 1930 they were living in the same place, but now Ralph was a trucker transferring freight. They now had 6 children, ages 3-15.^[6]

By 1935 during the Great Depression, the family had moved to Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. In 1940 Ralph was now a manager for a stove workshop.^[7]

By 1950 they had moved back to Union Township, Union County. Only daughter Helen was still living with her parents. Ralph was now a butcher for a wholesale meat dealer.^[8]

Edna passed away in January 1974 at age 81 and was buried in Winfield Cemetery, Winfield, Union County, Pennsylvania.^[9]
