A daughter of John and Amelia Garniss.

Katherine Jane Garniss married Salmon P Chase in Cincinnati, Ohio. "It was on the 4th of March, 1834, that, at the home of Mr. John P. Garniss, Salmon Portland Chase and Catherine Jane Garniss were married by Rev. Lyman Beecher."

Katherine Jane Garniss Chase died 1 December 1835 from childbirth fever, leaving a daughter, the first Catherine Jane, who died four years later.

Burial: Spring Grove Cemetery Cincinnati Hamilton County Ohio. Plot: Garden LN, Section 30, Lot 10, Space 1 Removed from Episcopal Cemetery and reinterred July 31, 1860.

The Hon. Salmon Portland Chase, Chief Justice of the United States, was graduated at Dartmouth College in 1826, with high honors. He was a Senator of the United States, from 1849 to 1855; Governor of Ohio, from 1855-1859; again a United States Senator in 1861; Secretary of the Treasury, from 1861 to 1864; and was appointed Chief Justice of the United States in 1865.

He married, 1st, Katherine Jane Garniss, March 4, 1834; 2d, Eliza Ann Smith, September 26, 1839; and 3d, Sarah Bella Dunlop Ludlow, November 6, 1846, and had several children, one of whom was the wife of the Hon. William Sprague, United States Senator from Rhode Island (Chase - p17)

"It was on the 4th of March, 1834, that, at the home of Mr. John P. Garniss, Salmon Portland Chase and Catherine Jane Garniss were married by Rev. Lyman Beecher.

Three months after the marriage of Salmon Portland to Eliza Smith, a scarlet fever epidemic erupted in Cincinnati. Mr. Garniss was ill during a time when his granddaughter Kitty was visiting him. On 24 Jan 1840, the child became ill and was diagnosed with scarlet fever. She died a few days later.
