Biography

William Rainey Gallagher was born in 1874. He was the son of John Gallagher and Agnes Hester.

William was the brother of Margaret Marshall, Robert, Thomas, Samuel and John, all of Houtzdale, Pennsylvania.

He married Agnes Hester Faulk. They were the parents of Suzanne Frantz, Dr. John T. Gallagher and William Jr.

William registered for the draft in 1917-1918.

He passed away on July 31, 1951 in Houtzdale, Pennsylvania.

Obituary

HOUTZDALE William R. Gallagher, secretary of the Pennsylvania Workmen's Compensation Board and former Clearfield county prothonotary and Republican county chairman, died of a stroke at his home here at 4:45 p. m. yesterday following a threemonths illness. He was 77.

Born March 15, 1874 at Arnot, Tioga county, he had been a resident of Houtzdale since he was 10 years old and was a coal operator for 42 years.

Mr. Gallagher was elected to two consecutive terms as county prothonotary, serving from 1932 to 1939 and served eight years, from 1940 to 1947, as Clearfield county Republican chairman.

He was appointed to the state post of secretary of the Pennsylvania Workmen's Compensation Board during the term of former Governor Martin and continued in that position until his death.

Teacher of a Bible class in the Houtzdale Presbyterian Church since 1922, Mr. Gallagher was clerk of that church's Session and an Elder of the Church for nearly 50 years. He was a charter member of the Houtzdale Rotary Club.

Mr. Gallagher was a 33rd degree Mason, a member of the Williamsport Consistory; a member of the Blue Lodge of Osceola Mills and its representative to the Grand Lodge for the past 40 years; charter commander of the Shrine and Knights Templar of the Jaffa Shrine of Altoona and a member of the Houtzdale lodge of the Odd Fellows.

On January 20, 1904 he married the former Maude Faulk of Houtzdale who survives him together with a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Frantz of Worthington, Pa , and two sons, Dr. John T. Gallagher of Madison, Wis , and William Jr. of Greensburg, Pa.

Also surviving are one sister and three brotheis, Mrs. James Marshall, Thomas, Samuel and John, all of Houtzdale. Six grandchildren survive.

Funeral service:; will be held from the Houtzdale Presbyterian Church Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock in charge of Rev. Louis W. Lytle, assisted by Rev. James A. Farrar. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Brisbin.

Friends may call, at the Gallagher home tonight and until time of services Friday. Special services will be conducted at the home tonight by the Odd Fellows of Houtzdale and at the graveside Friday by the Blue Lodge of Osceola Mills.
