Thank you for your message. In regards to merged profiles the profile Friar-177 becomes available for reuse so if after the merge was completed the next person to add a profile with the surname Friar, the new profile would become Friar-177
Pictures, the first picture is I believe auto added as profile this is easy to change on the picture edit/add page you until the box that says add as profile picture. Well it is easy when you know were to look... :)
You are very lucky to have a tree back to 1615 good luck with adding them all.
