Biography

Joseph Fowler, son of Capt. Henry Fowler, was born Oct. 30, 1701 at Eastchester, New York and died at North Castle, New York between Dec. 14, 1773 and Sept. 3, 1784, the dates of making and of probating his will. In 1716, Joseph Fowler, aged about 16 years, accompanied his father’s family to Mamaroneck, New York. Joseph married Hannah, daughter of Ammon Guion, Sr., of New Rochelle, New York and sister to Ammon Guion, Jr., of Rye (?). According to the terms of the will of Joseph Fowler 1773-1784, his lands were to be sold when his son James reached the age of 23, but the Revolution intervened between the making and probating of the will.

  1. Ann, b. prob. at White Plains; d. Nov. 23, 1780; m. Nathaniel Merritt, son of John and Mary (Cornelius) Merritt of North Castle. Before the Revolution they lived on leased land at Peekskill. He was a Loyalist and a captain in the British army; went to Maugersville, New Brunswick and testified at St. John in 1787.
  2. Joseph, b. June 14, 1729, probably at Rye; d. April 27, 1793; m. Hannah Owens; lived at Yorktown on leased Verplanck land.
  3. Stephen, b. Dec. 4, 1733 probably at Rye; d. March 29, 1782 in New York City; m. (1) at Stamford, Conn, by the Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, March 28, 1758 to (his second cousin) Hannah Fowler dau. of Caleb Fowler Esq.; “both of North Castle.” She d. Dec. 13, 1772, and he m. (2) Elizabeth (Dickinson) Leggett, widow. Stephen Fowler was a Loyalist and forfeited his land in North Castle, which was near that of his first wife’s father.
  4. Ammon, b. abt. 1736 at North Castle; d. 10th of 5th mo., 1809 at Bedford m. (1) Mary Weeden who was bapt. as “Mary Fowler, wife of Ammon” in the Stamford Conn, church with her son Weeden, May 26, 1761. He m. (2) Phoebe (Haight) Kipp, widow and lived on his father’s farm at North Castle, and at Bedford. Ammon Fowler was an American Patriot, but his son Weeden accompanied Ammon’s brothers Henry and James, to St. John, according to tradition. His lot at St. John adjoined theirs.
  5. Susannah, m. July 23,1761“of North Castle”, to William Hunt “of Westchester”, in St. John’s Ep. Ch. at Stamford, Conn. They were Loyalists; lived at North Castle for a time.
  6. Jean, unm. in 1773.
  7. Charity, m.Carpenter, as mentioned in her father’s will of 1773.
  8. Isaac, (“aged” in 1719) atNorthCastle; d.probably near Troy, N. Y.; lived at Yorktown until after 1800; purchased land at Troy, Rens. Co. in 1806.
  9. Henry, b. March 28, 1756 at North Castle; d. Feb. 2, 1843 at Hampton (French Village), New Brunswick; m. Feb. 29, 1784 at Hampton, Betty Morehouse. He was a LoyalISt and went to New Brunswick at the close of the Revolution; lived for a time at St. John and was granted land at Hampton.
  10. James, b. abt. 1758 at North Castle; d. before 1804 in Hampton (FrenchVillage), NewBrunswick; m. probably in White Plains, Rachel Hart, dau. of Monmouth Hart of that place. In his will, dated 1786, Monmouth Hart devised a sum of money to his dau., Rachel Fowler, “to be placed in her hands or her assigns, and no others.” James Fowler and his wife went to New Brunswick at the close of the Revolution; and James Fowler and his brother Henry and nephew Ammon Fowler had adjoining lots assigned them in St. John. In 1783 a tract of land at Hampton was granted to “James Fowler and others” and in 1803, after his decease, land was granted the widow, Rachel Fowler, and her sons Monmouth, Joseph and James H (art).

Joseph was named in the 15 Feb 1746 will of his brother Gilbert Fowler[1].
