William D. Forten was a leading member of the Equal Rights League in Philadelphia, and as such, was well-known in his community as an orator. In 1872 he was "on the ticket for Presidential elector"; he was one of the 29 electors to cast a vote for General Grant. [1]
1872. William D Forten, elector at large for the State of Pennsylvania, addresses the President of the United States :
"When Oppression frowns and with angry eyes glances at its suffering victims – when its iron grasp pinions the feeble and with despotic heel tramples down the poor – then it is, with pleading tongue and bleeding heart, their appeals are made for justice. It is thus we come, sir. At this day, before the nation's myriad eyes, we appeal to you, as the embodiment of national power, the representative of the people's will. We want justice..."[2]
