Barney Lancelot Ford was an escaped slave who became an entrepreneur and civil-rights pioneer in Colorado.^[1]

Barney was born to a white plantation owner and a slave woman named Phoebe. He met Julia Lyons in Illinois. They soon became married in 1849.

Also Julia's sister Susan married her husband's best friend Henry O Wagoner.
