Fannie Foote was one of the Golden 14, a group of Black women who were the first to serve as Yeomen (F) in the United States Navy. They were tasked with monitoring and tracking the new Navy recruits during World War I.
Fannie was one of the first Black women to serve in the United States Navy as Yeowomen, rather than the more common areas of nursing or in the mess. [1]
Fannie Arveilla Foote was born May 16, 1895, in Brenham, Washington County, Texas. She was the daughter of James Mat Foote and Sophia McIntyre.[2][3][4] She married Leland Dubois Ward 5 February 1927 in Alameda, California.[4]
She died November 24, 1962, in Los Angeles County, California.[5]
