Biography

Charles Flaxman was born in Hampshire in 1806 to Thomas Charles Flaxman and Elizabeth Sabben.^[1]

He married Jane Bell in 1833.^[2] They had two children: Samuel (b. 1833)^[3] and John (b. 1835)^[4] before emigrating to South Australia in 1838 on the ship Prince George.^[5][6] Charles' brother William had emigrated two years earlier. In South Australia, Charles acted as chief clerk for George Fife Angus.^[7][8]

Charles and Jane had six more children in Adelaide:

• Elizabeth Flaxman, born 1843;
• Maria Flaxman, born 1844;^[9]
• Emma Flaxman, born 1846;^[10]
• Mary Ann Flaxman, born 1848;^[11]
• Alice Flaxman, born 1850;^[12]
• Isabel Howard Flaxman, born 1853, died 1853.^[13]

In 1853, Charles and his family moved to Victoria where he became Comptroller and Secretary to the Commissioners of Savings Banks.^[14]

Charles died in South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria in 1869.^[15][16]
