The Fielden Hospital was built at Leebottom in 1892 by John Ashton Fielden, who was carrying out the wishes of his father, the late Mr. Samuel Fielden of Centre Vale. Samuel had long displayed an interest in the welfare of children and the building of a children's hospital had always been his dearest wish. [4]

In the probate of his will his estate is valued at £1.4 million. [8]
