Biography

Birth & Upbringing: Stephen was born in 1951. [1] He is the son of Leslie Field and Joyce Waller.
Family: He married Wendy Holt and they raised their family of three boys firstly in Salisbury, Rhodesia and then Johannesburg South Africa.
Migrations: During his youth, Stephen migrated with his parents to Southern Rhodesia [2] and has lived most of his childhood and early adult life in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe,) living first in Gwelo, later moving to Umtali in the Eastern Highlands. In late 1987, Stephen left Zimbabwe and settled in Johannesburg, South Africa train as a Haematologist During early 2003 Stephen returned, with his family to the United Kingdom and settled briefly on Stevenage in Hertfordshire.
Education: He was schooled in Umtali at Chancellor Junior school, then Umtali Boys High School. Stephen attended the University of Zimbabwe
Professional Qualifications: Medical Doctor, Pathologist and Haematologist:

University of the Witwatersrand; Master of Medicine (Haematology);
Colleges of Medicine, South Africa; Fellow of Colleges of Pathology;

Military Service: Stephen served as a territorial soldier on conscription with the Rhodesian Army Medical Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant.
Occupation: Medical Technologist, Medical Doctor, Haematologist. Stephen was first employed as a medical technologist with an Umtali, Rhodesia based Medical Laboratory, and then the Blood Transfusion Services in Harare, Zimbabwe before entering the University of Zimbabwe to study medicine. He did his internship at the Harare Group of Hospitals and served as a Senior House Officer (haematology oncology) before going into private General Practice. He settled in South Africa and took up a position with the University of the Witwatersrand (under the auspices of the South African Institute for Medical Research and School of Pathology) as a lecturer in the Department of Haematology (serving at a number of hospitals), thereafter being appointed a Principal Consultant and Senior Lecturer. He was the medical director of the South African Blood Transfusion Service (Inland Region). Following his arrival in England, Stephen took up a position with the National Blood Transfusion Services, Colindale, London. He spent then was appointed as Medical Director of Safe Blood for Africa and was tasked with setting up a model "demonstration" blood service in Abuja Nigeria. This was to become the starting point in the development of The Federal Blood transfusion Service in that country. He practised as a Locum Consultant Haematologist for St Mary NHS Trust and then took up a position with the Welsh Blood Transfusion Service. He is presently practising as the Medical and Scientific Director of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. [3]
Honours and Awards:
Sports: Stephen is an accomplished sportsman in both Judo and Rugby. He won the British Grand Masters Judo Championship in 2010 and was a medalist in the Welsh National, British Masters and Commonwealth Grand Masters Championships. He also represented South Africa at the World Masters Judo Championships in 2002 where he was also a medalist. Stephen participated in South African national and provincial judo tournaments at a competitive level and was also involved with sports administration. [3]
