John Roush Fesler was an Indiana merchant and soldier. Fesler was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War.

John Fesler was born in 1835, in Ohio. He was the son of William Fesler and Charity Elizabeth (Roush) Fesler. [1][2]

On October 27, 1857, John R Fesler married Harriet Fish in Morgan County, Indiana. [3] Parents: William Fesler 1807–1868 Charity Elizabeth Roush Fesler 1812–1897

On September 1, 1861, John Fesler was enrolled as Captain of Company G, 27th Indiana Infantry. On February 13, 1863, Fesler was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 27th Infantry. [4]

On May 5, 1863, Lieutenant Colonel Fesler was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville. During the Battle of Gettysburg, Colonel Colgrove temporarily took command of the brigade and Lieutenant Fesler took command of the 27th Regiment. [5] On July 20, 1864, at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, Colonel Colgrove was wounded and Lieutenant Colonel Fesler again assumed command of the regiment. Lieutenant Colonel Fesler mustered out of service on November 11, 1864. [6]

Post War

After the War, John Fesler returned to Indiana. Fesler was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.[6]

Lieutenant Colonel John Roush Fesler passed away in 1920. He was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana. [1]
