Biography

This profile is part of the Haverhill, Massachusetts One Place Study.
Pvt Jeremiah Felker served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Aug 27, 1864
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery

Jeremiah Smart Felker was born to Elias Felker and Patty Smart in 1838 as the result of an affair his father had on his wife, Polly Brock. He was then named after his mother's father and Patty eventually filed a paternity lawsuit in Brentwood, NH. His parents never married.

In the 1850 Census, he is seen living with his mother and her third husband, Joseph T Miles. His name in the census is Jeremiah Miles.

He grew up and married Elizabeth Fellows on February 16th, 1863[1] and had several children. He was also a private in the Union army during the American Civil War. He was in the 1st Regiment, New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. [2][3]

In the 1890s, his son, Wilfred, lost a custody battle with his ex-wife Gertrude over their son, Austin. The child ended up living with his grandparents for a number of years until he moved out and married Henrietta Legault.

On January 14th, 1918, Jeremiah passed away. On his death certificate his grandfather, Joseph, was listed as his father.[4]

I searched my data base and could only find one Felker who served in the United States Navy. His first name was George and he was from Ireland.
