James was born in Scotland, United Kingdom about 1845. He is the son of John Fairley and Elizabeth Baird. He passed away in 1907.

James married Mary Agnes Walker in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, Scotland during 1874 [2]
James Fairley migrated from Scotland to Victoria.
The family migrated to Victoria (Australia), arriving in Melbourne in 1886. They settled in Shepparton the following year. Upon arrival in Shepparton, James obtained work in a grocery store, which he later purchased and expanded.
When he died in 1907 the business, a prosperous department store, continued under the control of his sons John Frederick, William and Andrew.
