Biography

Constance was born on Mary 18, 1921, in Calgary, Alberta. Her parents were George and Eleanor Morris Evans, immigrants from Hartlepool, Durham, England. After living on the outskirts of town, the family settled in the neighborhood of Bridgeland-Riverside, where Connie was raised. Marriage

From the Calgary Herald' (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) 18 Aug 1944, Fri - page 6; as found on Newspapers.com:

POFFENROTH-EVANS
Central United church was the scene of a pretty wedding on Aug. 4, when Constance, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Evans, became the bride of Mr. Walter Poffenroth, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Poffenroth. Rev. R. W. Dalgleish officiated.
The bride was given in marriage by her father and wore a gown of white moire taffeta with sweetheart neckline and full skirt. Her veil of tulle reached the hem of her skirt and was held in place by a heart-shaped headdress of moire taffeta. She carried an arm bouquet of roses. Her ornaments were a double strand of pearls and pearl earrings, gifts of the bridegroom.
Mrs. Gwen Allan, sister of the bride, was matron-of-honor, and Miss Edith Mason was bridesmaid. Mr. Sam Befus was best man and ushers were Mr. Ben Evans and Mr. Henry Poffenroth.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Buffalo cafe, after which Mr. and Mrs. Poffenroth left for a honeymoon at the Pacific coast. For traveling the bride wore a black pin stripe suit with white accessories. Upon their return they will reside in Calgary.

Obituary

POFFENROTH, Constance "Connie"
March 18, 1921 - July 16, 2013
Connie Poffenroth passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, AB on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the age of 92 years. She was born in Calgary to parents George and Eleanor Evans. She enjoyed the company of six older siblings: George, Jack, Sid, Ben, Harold and Gwen. Connie grew up in Bridgeland and played ice hockey for the Bridgeland/Riverside Redwings in the late 1930's, one of three teams in the first women's league in Calgary. Upon graduating from Commercial Business Studies at Western Canada High School, Connie worked for Alberta Government Telephones as a telephone operator in the 1940's, a job she would remain proud of all her life. Surviving are.... She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Walter Poffenroth, in 2008; by her grandson, Dean Poffenroth, in 1996, and by her son, Bob Poffenroth, in 2013. To all who knew her, Connie will be remembered as a compassionate and gentle soul. Throughout her long life, she formed many genuine friendships and maintained meaningful relationships with extended family members. Even during her difficult and lengthy struggle with dementia, Connie was able to recognize and communicate with her daughter and she spoke often of her beloved son. I would like to acknowledge all the staff at Newport Harbour Long Term Care Centre for their support and understanding and for allowing my mother the freedom to be who she was at the end of her life. If so desired, charitable donations in memory of Connie Poffenroth may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society Calgary.... A private gathering in celebration of Connie's life journey will be held. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca. FOSTER'S GARDENCHAPEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIUM. Telephone: 403-297-0888. Honoured Provider of Dignity Memorial.
