Biography

George Evans was the son of George Evans (1851-1928) and Sarah Wilson (1849-1916). He was born on May 20, 1880, in West Hartlepool, Durham, England. He can be seen below with his family in the 1891 England Census. George married Eleanor Morris around September 1900.

Then George and his brother John (Jack) emigrated to Canada, travelling on the Empress of Ireland. They arrived in Quebec on May 10, 1907, destination Winnipeg. Their occupation was "bricklayer." At some point the fellows made their way to Calgary. On November 13, 1909, George's wife and family arrived in Canada on the vessel Lake Erie, destination Calgary. The now intact family can be seen below in the 1911 Canada census. One wonders what the family were doing out on the edge of the city and where George was working.

In 1916 George joined the military and served with the Royal Canadian Army Military Corps. Afterwards he and his family moved to Bridgeland-Riverside where they lived at 106 9A St. N.E. Eleanor died in 1948. By then George and Eleanor had left Bridgeland and had moved across town to 3026 5th St. W. This is where George was also living when he died on August 27, 1961.

Research Notes

One would like to know more about George's employment history and his activities in the Calgary labor movement. Usually his given occupation has been bricklayer but when his wife came to Canada, on the ship's passenger list, she indicated her husband's occupation was brickmaker. Was he located on the outskirts of the city because he was making bricks? Also, did George work with or for his brother John?
