An American R&B singer who had several hit records on the pop chart in the 1950s and early 1960s. Her most successful records were "Tweedle Dee" (1955), "Jim Dandy" (1956), and "I Cried a Tear" (1958).
In 1990, she received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and in 1991, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her song "Jim Dandy" was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was ranked #343 on the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Born Delores Evans on November 11, 1929 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA., the daughter of Anna Evans.[1]
Her 1st marriage was as Delores McMurley (her mother's new surname) to Eugene Williams on December 23, 1948 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.
Her 2nd marriage was to Melvin (Slappy) White on February 19, 1959 at Pennsylvania Avenue AME Zion Church in Baltimore, Maryland and they were divorced in 1969.
LaVern died on March 10, 1997 in Queens, New York City, New York and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York.[4]
