Biography
Albertine (Epps) Appo is a part of US Black heritage.
Albertine Epps was born in 1849 in North Elba, New York. She was the daughter of Lyman and Julia Epps.[1] Her parents were black settlers in the failed colony of Timbuctoo, and the only family who managed to prosper there.[2][3][4]
In 1870 she married William Appo, a widowed musician who was 40 years her senior and had also settled in North Elba. They had a daughter, Maud Albertine, born in Manhattan in 1872.[5]
William Appo died in January 1880. Later that year Albertine was living in North Elba with her daughter and her brother Lyman Epps.[6] In 1900 she was living with her mother and siblings, still in North Elba, and was a dressmaker.[7]
In 1920 she was in New Castle, New York, as housekeeper of Mr. George Mosely.[8]
She died on 6 July 1927 in Mount Kisco, New York.[9]

There are many articles and books which mention her dad and mom, Anna. Julia is listed in 1850 but there are no relationships shown this early. Anna shares a tombstone with Lyman and it's inscribed as wife. Julia may be a sister? The two women were born 11 years apart, I don't believe Anna was interchanging her given & middle names as was common. The same articles say that Lyman Jr. said that Lyman & Anna fled Troy, NY for North Elba. But Julia is the only older female listed in Lyman Sr.'s household in the first Timbuctoo Census, Anna's name isn't there until 1855. I've set up two wives for Lyman, they can be merged later if data shows Julia and Anna are the same person. Maybe Lyman Jr.'s kids or grandkids know the answer.
In 1855, Julia is gone, Anna, her oldest daughter, two younger kids and Lyman Sr.'s mom appear. Could they've been in Troy until the homestead was built? Need Troy's 1850 Census.
