Biography

James was born on 16 May 1848 in the western part of Pickens District, South Carolina, that would soon become Oconee County. He was a son of Edward Hembree Jr. and Elizabeth Sanders.[1]

James was a blacksmith, and used both surnames "Emory" and "Hembree," as his father had before him. Every census is reported in a variation of spelling of "Hembree," but records relating to his children indicate it was the name "Emory" that he passed down to them.

On 20 Sep 1866, he married Martha Jane Sanders in Pickens District, South Carolina. By 1870, they had moved to Sevier County, Tennessee,[2] where his mother and other family members were living. By 1880, James and his family were living in Knox County, Tennessee. They reported having eleven children, although twelve are listed on the census records:[3]

  1. Harriet Alice (1868-1905)
  2. Margaret Elizabeth (1870-)
  3. Willis Alonzo (1872-1941)
  4. Eliza Mariah (1873-)
  5. Josie Ella (1875-1949)
  6. Frances "Frenchy" Annona (1877-1909)
  7. James Campbell (1879-)
  8. Eva Berletta (1881-1952)
  9. Jesse (1882-)
  10. Edna (1886-)
  11. V.R. (1887-)
  12. Owen (1893-)

By 1900, they had moved again, to Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia.[4][5]

James passed away on 22 Nov 1901. He was buried in Concord Masonic Cemetery, Concord, Knox County, Tennessee. The headstone bears the surname "Emory." [6]
