Biography

Joseph was born in 1776. He is the son of Jacob Emmerich and Elizabeth Beck.

He was found on the 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 Federal Census Schedules of Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

In 1822 he signed his name Joseph Emrich but "Joseph Emery" is engraved on his tombstone.

In 1836, Joseph's sons, Philip and John, applied for an administration bond in order to settle their fathers' estate. The first page of the probate file (Joseph Emery, File #4647, Northampton County Court) follows:

"Know all men by these presents, That we Philip Emry, farmer, John Emry, farmer, John Emry, farmer, and John Schock, farmer, all of Upper Mt. Bethel township in the County of Northampton and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are held and firmly bound unto the commonweath of Pennsylvania, in the sum of Six Thousand dollars,... Dated the twentieth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six."

The second mentioned John Emry and John Schock apparently were bondsmen, not administrators of the estate. An account of the disbursements from the estate did not include payments to the heirs, and unfortunately, neither the final account nor a list of all heirs was included.

The Mount Bethel Reformed and Lutheran Church baptism records included the names of his children.
