Peggy Lee was an American jazz singer, songwriter and actress whose career spanned six decades.
Family Life
Peggy was born in 1920, the daughter of Marvin Egstrom and Selma Anderson. In 1924, her mother Selma passed away. A year later, the Egstrom household in Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota consisted of: M O Egstrom, 50; Leonard Egstrom, 16; Clare Egstrom, 9; Milford Egstrom, 20; Marion Egstrom, 13; Norma Egstrom, 5.[1]
In 1942, Peggy had her first #1 hit, "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place." followed by "Why Don't You Do Right?" She then began collaborating on songs, often with her first husband, Dave Barbour, including "I Don't Know Enough About You", "Golden Earings", "It's a Good Day" and “Mañana,” and several songs for Walt Disney's Lady and the Tramp.
She also had an acting career; she starred in The Jazz Singer (1952) and Pete Kelly's Blues (1955), for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She provided speaking and singing voices for several characters in the Disney movie Lady and the Tramp (1955), playing the human Darling, the dog Peg, and the two Siamese cats, Si and Am.
Legacy
Among her many accolades, Peggy received 12 Grammy Awards, and in 1995 the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1999, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
She passed away in 2002.[5] Her ashes were buried in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
