Alwayne Dunlap was born in 1920 in Washington, D.C. to Kansans Balis Allen Dunlap (1890-1971) and Bessie Lee (1890-1934).[1] His known siblings were:

  • Lee A Dunlap (1914–2012)
  • Beula R Dunlap (1916–1932)
  • Balis Allen Dunlap (1917–1983)
  • Lynn R Dunlap (1922–1991)

His father was an office clerk for the U.S. government. Alwayne was about fourteen when his mother died in 1934; he graduated from Randall Junior High School that same year.[2] His father remarried in 1935,[3] but that marriage was short-lived and the couple separated by 1940.[4] In 1937, he graduated from Armstrong High School.[5] Alwayne continued to live at home with his father while attending the Miner Teachers' College. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, graduating in June of 1941.[6] Then Pearl Harbor was attacked in December of 1941.

In February of 1942, he enlisted in the army;[7] he served at Fort George Meade, Fort Bragg and Camp Livingston before enrolling in the Tuskegee Army Air Field flying school. He graduated from the flying school in March of 1943, and reported to the Army Air Base at Selfridge Field in Michigan[8] prior to being deployed to North Africa with the 99th Fighter Squadron, 322nd Fighter Group in April. He flew his first combat mission on June 2 of that same year.

On 21 Feb, 1944, Alwayne was killed when, returning from a mission in defense of the Anzio beachhead, he overshot a landing strip on Anzio Beach in Italy and crashed. He is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Lazio, Italy.[9][10]
