Memories of Ruth

At the time of her first marriage, Ruth worked as a schoolteacher. But her passion was being a herbalist. She collected her herbs and shipped them off to factories for processing,. She would also take tours of young people and seniors to woods, fields and bogs, showing us where to find the precious herb. I remember one cold, windy day collecting labador leaves for labador tea. Ruth was a genealogist, an author, and a herbalist. In the 1980's Ruth and I, Marilyn Stewart, collaborated on a book, "Sunshine and Mustard Plaster's". We had a fantastic time collecting old remedies, and Ruth using her knowledge of herbs to add present day uses of the plants around us.

She enjoyed meeting people and learning all about them and their families. She had a skill, and the ability to extract information and mentally retain it. Collecting oral history was her favourite form of research, but she also spent hours doing research in the archive at Fredericton. During the bicentennial year, Ruth became a member of the Nashwaak Bicentennial Association and helped the History committe with research.

The Cleghorn History she later produced was a work of love. A lasting History for her children.

Ruth's collection of work can be found at the Harvey Heritage site as well as at the Province of New Brunswick. [5]

She was the author of "Alexander Bates and many of his descendants".
