Biography

Scottish flag
David (Drummond) Drummond Second Lord Drummond was born in Scotland.

Born about 1515 to Walter Drummond (d.1518) and his spouse Elizabeth Graham daughter to William, first Earl of Montrose. His paternal grandfather, Sir William Master of Drummond had died 1503/1504 during the life of his father John first Lord Drummond and thus when John Lord Drummond died in 1519, young David became second Lord Drummond with his kinsman John Drummond of Innerpeffray acting as his tutor.[1] David was served heir to his great grandfather John Lord Drummond of Cargill on 15 Feb 1520/21. [2]

  • On David reaching full age, King James V made an obligation to him and led to his marriage to Margaret Stewart niece to the king. It provides much information and reads as follows :
  • Obligation granted by James V promising to infeft heritably David Lord Drummond in all lands, rents and offices which pertained to John Lord Drummond his great-grandfather. These had fallen into the king's hands by reason of the forfeiture of the said John Lord Drummond "for the tressonable and violent putting of handis" on Lyon King of Arms. Exception is made of the lands of Innerpeffray, Fordoun of Auchterarder, Dalquhonie and Glenquoich with the patronage of the provostry and chaplainry of Innerpeffray which the king was to give to John Drummond of Innerpeffray and his spouse Margaret, Lady Gordon, the king's sister. For this bond David Lord Drummond is to pay 2,000 pounds Scots money to the king and to marry Margaret Stewart, daughter of the said Lady Gordon, and to give her in conjunct fee the lands and barony of Cargill. Given at Stirling and signed by the king on 5 Jan 1535/1536.[3]. The marriage of David to Margaret took place within two months for by 5 Mar 1535/36 she is named as his spouse when they had a charter of Cargill and many other lands in the counties of Perth and Forfar,[4]
  • Margaret Stewart had only one child, Sibilla. Margaret died about 1541 and David married secondly to Lilias, daughter to William Lord Ruthven before November 1542. [5]

He and his spouse Lilias Drummond received a Royal Charter of the lands of the barony of Cargill on 7 Dec 1543. [6] The second marriage produced two sons and five daughters.

  • He was a supporter of Mary Queen of Scots in the party known as the Queens Men.
  • A very good account of his life complete with source references is found in the Scots Peerage Vol.7 pp 45-47[7]

Davis died about 1572 his son Patrick being retoured his heir at Perth on 21 Oct 1572.[8]

David Drummond, 2nd Lord Drummond married Lillias Ruthven before 4 November 1542 since they appeared in a charter, #4969, as husband and wife dated 4 November 1542.

Hello Stevenson,

Regarding Drummond -27 and Drummond 1427 I agree that these should be merged. You will see from my profile for him that I place his birth about 1515 (don't know where the 1505 came from) as he was granted land and married in mid-1530's. His father died in 1518 so 1515 is acceptable but 1522 not. Also I have placed a fairly detailed profile with source material backing it up. Stirnet is quite good but not a primary source and thus useless for checking accuracy. My line come from his first marriage . Do you have source for date of his second marriage 1543 as it would be useful to add that? The Scots Peerage (copy on archive.org) is a trustworthy source as it gives the reference details of primary source material.

I agree to merge providing primary sources are all retained and where appropriate added to.

Thanks for proposal. Jack

Drummond-860 and Drummond-27 do not represent the same person because: Merge not working

Retrying

We have so many of the Drummonds that someone needs to take charge of merging all of them into one. There are at least 4 David's, 3 Lilias Ruthven Drummond's and I don't know how many Patricks. How do we get them all merged into one person so that each one has only one wife and one husband. It is driving me crazy. Trying to figure them out. Help!
