Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
Catharine (Downes) Houseman was born in Darley, Yorkshire, England.

Catharine was born about 1767 and baptised at St Thomas a Beckett church in Hampsthwaite on 6 December 1767[1]. She was the daughter of Alice (Moon) and John Downes (a farmer)[1]. The family were probably living in Darley, which was within the parish of Hampsthwaite at the time.

Catharine married William Houseman on 2 January 1792 at St Thomas a Beckett Church in Hampsthwaite. Both parties could sign their own name[2]. According to their children's baptism records and other documentation listing place of birth the family lived at Dacre[4], at a place called Oxen Close.

Catharine and William had eleven children: William (1792 - 1814), John (1794 - 1859), George (1796 - 1855), Elizabeth (1798 - 1814), Mary (1799 - 1879), Margaret (1801 - 1849), Alice (1803 - 1888), Nancy (1804 - X), Catharine (1807- 1808), Catherine (1808 - 1873) and Michael (1812 - 1818).

Catharine was a beneficiary of her father's will written on 4 April 1793[3] (a full image of the will is linked from her father's page). In the will her married name of Houseman was used.

She died, aged 64[4], in 1830 and was buried at Pateley Bridge on 2 October 1830[4].

Research Notes

  • A sibling of my direct ancestor. The Housemans and the Down(e)s were quite numerous in the area and can get conflated. Please do get in touch if I can help. Houseman-341 12:15, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
  • The spelling of her name appears to be Catharine in all the records, although her own signature is smudged in the marriage register so not possible to tell if it's "a" or "e". Her father spells it Cathrine in his will. Houseman-341
