Leo Dillon and his wife Diane Sorber Dillon were an illustrator team specializing in children's books and science fiction paperbacks. Together they won two consecutive Caldecott Medals for children's book illustrations and a Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist in science fiction. Leo was the first African-American to receive the Caldecott medal. [1]
Lionel was born in 1933 in Brooklyn, New York to Trinidad immigrant parents, Lionel and Marie Dillon.[2]
Lionel married fellow art student Diane Sorber in Brooklyn, New York in 1957 after they both graduated from Parsons School of Design, a prestigious art school.[3]
He passed away in 2012.[4]
