Joseph was born in 1864. He was the son of Carl Diethelm and Elisabeth Fessler. He grew up in a log cabin on his family's farm in Laketown Township (Victoria), Carver, MN and received a 6th grade education.
Around 1876 his parents and at least some of their children spent a couple of years on the west coast; in California, Washington, and Oregon. Joe would have been around 12 years old at the time and presumably went with them. His brother Mike took care of their dad's farm during their absence.
Shortly after they returned to Minnesota, his parents started a new homestead in Tokua (aka Toqua), in Big Stone County; on the Minnesota-South Dakota border. His parents still owned their Laketown farm they but lived in Tokua long enough to satisfy the homestead requirement, about 5 or 6 years, then sold it and returned to Laketown. The 1880 census shows Charles, Elisa, Joseph, Mary and Frank living in Toqua, Big Stone, MN .[1]
In the 1885 census, Joe is the only child still living with his parents in Laketown. They also have a boarder, 76 year old Anton Schumacher.
He married Susanna Hoehn (1868-1944) on 1/25/1887 in Victoria, Carver Co.[2] Daughter of Henry Hoehn and Helen Schoener. Click here to see their marriage certificate.

In the same column as the above article was a cheerful bit of news about his parents departing for a year long visit to the West Coast. It's entirely possible that Joe bought his parent's farm at this time, thus financing their west coast trip. It may not be a coincidence that his parents made their first trip to the west coast right after their first son's marriage, and his purchase of 80 of their acres,
In the 1895 census, his parents weren't living on their old homestead, but in their oldest son's house. Comparing Laketown Twp plat maps: 1880 vs 1898, the earlier map shows (part of) his dad's farm. The later map shows Joe's farm at the same location. Evidence that Joe bought his dad's farm. (See map section below.)
Joe was a dairy farmer. He and Susanna had at least 10 children. Susanna passed away in 1944.
Joe passed away in 1958 of bilateral pneumonia.[4] and is buried in St. Victoria Catholic Church Cemetery in Victoria, Carver, MN. He was 94 years old.[5]
