James was born in 1808. He was the son of Ezekial Dewey and Elizabeth Gooden. He married Martha Patty Priest about 1833 in Canada. In addition to daughter, Lydia Dewey, they had the following children: Aaron Dewey 1839-1836 , Susannah Dewey 1840-1887, James Dewey 1842-1865, Melinda Dewey 1844-1847, Amos Dewey 1845-1865, George Dewey 1848-1897, and Emma Dewey 1852-1860. He passed away in 1865.
