Biography

Cherstina was the daughter of Johan Delin and Svenborg Westberg. Her godmother was Bengta Persdotter. Her other godparents were Truls Kullenberg, Hanna Pyk(?) and Kersti Kullenberg.

Cherstina married firstly Nils Nilsson Kullenberg ("Lille Nils"), and had 3 children with him. After being widowed in 1810, she married secondly in 1812 the sailor and fisherman Lars Persson Toll of Mölle Läge, son of Per Andersson and Hanna Jönsdotter. She had three children in this marriage, one of whom, Sissa, was born three weeks before the wedding (as Cherstina and Lars were betrothed, Sissa was counted as legitimate). The family lived at Mölle Läge No 42.

Cherstina was widowed a second time when Lars died some time before 1824. As a widow, Cherstina was poor, and is registered as "in utmost poverty" (utfattig) and "pauper" (fattighjon) in the 1820s parish records. In the 1840s, after the death of her son Nils in 1845, she seems to have stayed for a while in Malmö according to Brunnby household records, possibly with one of her other children. In 1851, she was still living in her old house, No 42, in Mölle läge. As the widow of a sailor, she was given a yearly stipend of 10 riksdaler banco from Malmö sjömanshus [1]. She passed away aged 91 and was buried December 18 1870.

Out of her six children, two (the older Nils and Johannes) died in childhood on the same day in 1817. The younger Nils drowned at age 24 in 1845. Daughter Botilla passed away from tuberculosis in 1839.

Trivia: Cherstina's first husband was named Nils, as were his older brother and their father. Cherstina had one son named Nils with her first husband and one son named Nils with her second husband. Adding them up, she had a husband, a father-in-law, a brother-in-law, and two sons named Nils.

Research Notes

In her baptismal records, from Mölle, Brunnby parish, Sweden, her name is spelled Cherstena. In later household records, it is spelled Kjersti. In her daughter Sissa's birth record, the name is Kerstina Kullenberg, possibly because she was a widow at the time (other widows were also mentioned with their husband's name). In the death record, her name is Delin, as it is in the household records.
