He arrived in South Australia in the British Empire in 1850 with his parents, and the family settled between Macclesfield and Strathalbyn at farming and dairying. In 1852, Mr. Dawson went to the Bendigo goldfields with his brother Henry and his brother-in-law (Richard Hanna). In 1854 at Gumeracha he was farming on South Australian Company's land, and in 1866 settled at Waterloo, on the River Light, where he carried on farming and grazing.
